The Benefits and Drawbacks of Veneers

Veneers, in general, are thin flakes of dental ceramics or photopolymer. They replace damaged or unsightly front surfaces of teeth, allowing patients to improve their vision. In addition, veneers are solutions to cosmetic issues such as fractures, gaps between teeth, light distortion, staining, bad order, caries, etc. Veneers are applied to the tooth’s outer surface closest to the mouth.

Their thickness is 0.5 mm on average. Before affixing, the tooth’s top surface is thinning while only consuming 30% of its volume. This is one of the benefits of veneers over crowns, which can take up to 70% of the tooth’s volume. This amount is particularly invasive given that the tooth is sometimes critical ( alive, not killed ).

Veneers in Singapore are classified into two types based on their material: ceramic and photopolymer.

They are classified as direct or indirect depending on how they are placed.

Bonding refers to direct veneers. The work on them is done directly into the patient’s mouth. Made of toughened resin ( photopolymer ). They are less expensive than porcelain veneers. In good care, the average lifespan is between 8 and 10 years. The main disadvantages are the ability to change colour over time and the loss of the radiance achieved by polishing.

After a file down, a dental technician creates indirect veneers, and the dentist prepares the patient’s teeth. Veneers are made of porcelain, which means they will last for about 15 years. Another advantage of this type of intervention is that the material does not change colour over time, which saves gums and allows the colour to be chosen to blend in with the other teeth. Of course, quality comes at a cost. Bonding is less expensive than porcelain veneers. Placing them requires precision, so if you choose this method, carefully select the specialist who will handle your case.

Quality veneers will not peel or fall apart. So you can continue to eat and drink with them as before. But, of course, you must spare them. Using teeth with veneers to break nuts or open bottles is unacceptable.

Important information to remember when getting veneers:

If you have gingivitis, you must heal your gums before getting veneers.

Many people are concerned that if veneers are placed on their front teeth, they will be unable to bite and eat normally. This is not correct. Front teeth with veneers continue to perform the same function as before, with the same result.

Veneers require good oral hygiene – toothpaste, dental floss, and antibacterial mouthwash – to last longer and look better.

The teeth with facets look natural if the correct shade is chosen and precisely placed.

The time required to manufacture porcelain veneers varies between laboratories, but the average time is 20 days.

It is incorrect to believe that veneers can harm teeth or hasten the onset of caries.

Veneers are only used on natural teeth. Therefore, they cannot be used with crowns or without natural teeth.
