Resveratrol is a chemical compound that can be found most abundantly on the skin of grapes. While the compound is also present in different plant sources such as mulberries and lilies, the most readily available and practical source are grapes.

Traditionally, resveratrol is part of an oriental cure for illnesses stemming from the heart and the liver (the formulation for Ko-jo-kon is a good example). In modern times, it is said that resveratrol is responsible for the so-called French Paradox.

The French Paradox

What’s so paradoxical about the French, anyway? The root of this catch phrase is the fact that the French normally have high-fat meals on a daily basis. Nevertheless, the incidence of heart disease in the country is low. Normally, a population that thrives (and gets sick) on fatty diets suffers from cardiovascular anomalies more than anyone. However, the French, don’t. The explanation is that the high wine intake of the French is responsible for reducing the incidence of heart disease.

Wines are produced from high-quality grapes; fermented grapes that have been aged to produce high-flavor liquors. It should be noted though that the amount of resveratrol is dependent on the amount of time that the grape skins have been fermented with the wine. Young wines have less resveratrol, while older wines with the pips, skin and stems included have higher levels of the compound.

Resveratrol As An Anti-Oxidant

According to some clinical studies, resveratrol has proven to be a good anti-oxidant. It prevents the peroxidation of LDL or low density lipoproteins, which are also known as bad cholesterol. As an anti-oxidant, it has been adjudged that resveratrol is a quality compound because of its hydrophilic and lipophilic nature.

The compound can even affect platelet aggregation, which means it can also act as a blood thinner. Blood thinners are generally good because they prevent the formation of clots that lead to heart attack, thrombosis and stroke. It should be noted though that most of the studies supporting the use of resveratrol have been done in artificial environments and not in the human body.

Resveratrol For Cancer

Resveratrol has also been studied in relation to present cancer medicine. There are three phases that resveratrol is being studied as a potentially anti-cancer agent: during the initiation of cancer cells, the promotion of the cancer cells and finally, during the progression of the cancer itself. Resveratrol has proven to be an effective anti-oxidant during the tumor formation phase, because inhibits the formation of free radicals.

It has also proven to have anti-mutagen properties when used in rats. Resveratrol has also been shown to inhibit the formation of cyclo-oxygenase-1 or COX-1. COX-1 stimulates the growth of potentially cancerous tumor cells. By inhibiting the substance itself, resveratrol is preventing the cancer from going past its first phase.

If you couple this with a sensible diet and the prescribed medication, you have a higher chance of beating cancer because you’re boosting you body’s defenses. Why is resveratrol attractive as an anti-cancer compound? Apart from being generally safe, resveratrol is also minimally toxic to cells that are responsible for blood formation. Therefore, the blood and all its vital components are not compromised further.
