Diet Pills With Ephedra
The Hidden Menace to Dieters around the World
Weight loss is by no means an easy task; that’s why it’s doubly hard to trust online pharmacies or drug retailers when there’s the possibility of ordering diet pills with ephedra. Ephedra, or “ma huang” (a way for manufacturers to avoid being banned in the beginning, by renaming ephedra) has been banned by the FDA since the year 2004.
What Is Ephedra?
According to an FDA primer dedicated to the information dissemination regarding ephedra, Ma huang or ephedra comes from certain plants and herbs. In the United States and other countries, the chemical components of ephedra can be synthesized under strict conditions in research laboratories.
How come diet pills with ephedra were allowed to exist in the world market and specifically, the US market if the active ingredient was potentially dangerous and generally ineffective?
The answer lay in a technicality regarding the production and distribution of medicaments. In the United States, the FDA’s regulations were more liberal toward medicaments that had been proclaimed by manufacturers as mere “health supplements” and not drugs.
Difference Between Over The Counter And Prescription Weight Loss Drugs
It is very important now to differentiate between OTC “diet” pills and prescription weight loss drugs. In the US and in the UK there are some drugs that are prescribed by doctors to help in the weight control of severely obese patients. These drugs, such as orlistat have been tested in rigorous laboratory conditions and have been approved by the FDA for medical use.
Health supplements or food supplements on the other hand, require no such thing. This is the reason why many health supplements purport on their own that laboratory tests had been done, and that their products indeed work when consumed.
Ephedra Side Effects

Since 2003 the Food and Drug Administration in the United States has already been warning of the hazardous consumption of diet pills with ephedra.
According to the FDA, there have been reports of painful heart palpitations and insomnia. It seems that the alkaline compounds that form ephedra were affecting both the heart, the nervous system including the brain.
In some instances, actual cases of dementia and psychoses emerged. The same problems arose with other drugs that treated common illnesses such as toenail fungus. To be on the safe side, the FDA warns that using diet pills in general (especially ephedrine diet pills) will never support long term weight loss plans.
