About Hoodia Gordonii - Any side effects?

Hoodia gordonii cactus

Cultivation and sales of Hoodia gordonii

Research and clinical trials on Hoodia side effects

In the United States alone, obesity is fast becoming one of the leading killers through heart attack, stroke and diabetes. Today, it is estimated that 25% of all Americans in the US are obese. A percentage of these individuals are morbidly obese.

People must do something to reduce this alarming figure. While people are amenable to the idea of losing weight to prolong their lives, appetite is becoming harder and harder to defeat.

The cactus Hoodia or Hoodia gordonii is becoming popular as an appetite suppressant. Hoodia gordonii side effects are minimal, and the diet pills have become widely available.

The Hoodia gordonii appetite suppressant came from a desert cactus. The cactus is a flowering variety, and the San tribe in South Africa was responsible for local knowledge regarding its beneficial effects.

The plant itself grows to about three feet. Its use within the communal tribe of the Sans was also a hunger suppressant, much like the way the Aztecs used coffee beans to ward off hunger. The plant had been discovered in the 1930s, but it was not until much later that the plant was formally studied as a probable hunger suppressant.

Hoodia gordonii side effects are insignificant. According to Dr. Patrick B. Massey, a medical director for alternative and complementary medicine for Alexian Brothers Hospital Network., a molecule is responsible for the thirst and hunger suppressing effects of the Hoodia plant:

It was discovered that the appetite suppressing effect of Hoodia is most likely related to a steroid-like molecule, P57. Rats injected with P57 directly into the brains reduced their appetite by 40 percent to 60 percent, and it was hypothesized that P57 binds to receptors in the hypothalamus, suppressing both hunger and thirst.

One clinical trial involved 18 obese participants who, after taking hoodia for two weeks, were able to reduce their daily caloric intake by 1,000 calories and also became more active.

Research regarding the direct effects on human hunger and thirst are currently underway in many parts of the world. However, there is one particular study where 18 obese subjects used Hoodia. Dr. Massey relates:

Since Hoodia gordonii side effects are minimal or non-existent, people can now begin to use it safely for their own weight-loss efforts. It should be noted that authentic Hoodia cactus from South Africa grow in the wild. It may be cultivated, if you can get the proper permits to transport it.

Hoodia is being sold worldwide in either tea or diet pill form. According to Dr. Massey, P57 just might be the next big thing, but research still has to continue to develop the cactus’ potential as obesity treatment and more research is required in relation to Hoodia gordonii side effects:

Given Hoodia's historical use as well as the intriguing results in the few studies that have been done, P57 might well hold promise for weight loss.

It would be the American dream to take a pill and lose 1,000 calories a day, without hunger pains. However, until both better manufacturing standards are established and clinical research is conducted, Hoodia should not be considered as a "first line" therapy for obesity.
